Post-Op Rehabilitation

Post-operative rehabilitation focuses on getting you back to yourself after surgery.  The rehabilitation process can differ depending on the surgery and the intended protocol your surgeon wants you to follow.  In general, it can look like the following:

The initial phase focuses on allowing the repaired tissues to heal while promoting gentle movement.  Phase two transitions into allowing the body to relearn natural movement.  The third and final phase focuses on regaining full strength, balance and flexibility to return to sport or work.  Examples of surgeries requiring post-op therapy include:

  • Rotator cuff and labral repairs of the shoulder

  • Spinal surgeries of the neck and low back

  • Total hip, knee, and ankle replacements

  • Labral repairs of the hip

  • Knee meniscectomies and meniscal repairs

  • ACL reconstructions of the knee

  • Achilles tendon reconstruction

  • Arthroscopies of the shoulder, hip, knee, or ankle

  • Internal fixations of fractures
